Chattisgarh PMU

The Chattisgarh PMU is a Gender Sensitive Sustainable Sanitation improvement and management through community initiative project. This was a demonstrative project over a period of one year. The project was implemented in areas where ADB funded rural road project has been completed.

The project has two main objectives. These are:

To successfully demonstrate a sustainable sanitation program model implemented and managed collectively by the community stakeholders
To ensure the availability of a practical process based manual on implementation of sanitation program

The strategies applied for the project were:

Strengthening of Self Help Groups
Formation of women federation
Formation of Village sanitation committees (VCS)
Formation of Project management committee (PMC).

Some of the key achievements are as follows:

A fully functional project office has been established
Rapid Rural Appraisal has been conducted
Situational Assessment conducted in the identified project villages
The concept of the intervention has been introduced
Concept has been introduced with Panchayat members/Teaching staff/Health functionaries
Assessment of SHGs has been done
Strengthening of SHG has been started
Trainings have been given on following topics:
1. Training on Concept sharing to women SHG leaders/members
2. Training on SHG management to women SHG leaders/members
3. Training has been given on Concept sharing and gender sensitization to Panchayat leaders
4. Training has been given on SHG and Gender sensitization to Women SHG leaders
5. Training on Hygiene and sanitation to women SHG leaders/VSC members
6. Training on Micro planning given to women SHG leaders/VSC members
7. Training on Latrine construction given to women SHG leaders/members
Assistance to SHGs on Record keeping for better maintenance of records
Strengthening of SHGs
Networking with Government departments/officials
Formation of Village Sanitation Committees in each project village
Self supported mechanism has been established for village cleanliness with the help of Panchayat
Exposure visit successfully undertaken by the VSC members
